Product Photo Size Guide for Every Platform
7 min readThe definitive reference for product image dimensions, aspect ratios, and file size requirements across every major ecommerce platform. Updated for 2026.
Amazon Image Requirements
Amazon has the strictest image requirements of any major marketplace. Non-compliant images can lead to listing suppression.
- Main image: Pure white background (RGB 255,255,255). Product fills 85% of frame.
- Minimum resolution: 1000 x 1000 pixels (enables zoom). Recommended: 2000 x 2000px.
- Maximum resolution: 10,000 x 10,000 pixels.
- Aspect ratio: 1:1 (square) recommended for consistency.
- File format: JPEG (.jpg), PNG, TIFF, or GIF (non-animated).
- File size: Up to 10MB per image.
- Color space: sRGB or CMYK.
- Total listing images: Up to 9 (1 main + 8 additional).
- No text, graphics, watermarks, or borders on main image.
Shopify Image Requirements
Shopify is more flexible than Amazon, but following best practices ensures your store looks professional across all themes.
- Recommended resolution: 2048 x 2048 pixels.
- Maximum resolution: 4472 x 4472 pixels (20 megapixels).
- Maximum file size: 20MB per image.
- Aspect ratio: Square (1:1) for most themes. Some themes support 3:2 or 4:3.
- File format: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC, AVIF.
- Shopify auto-compresses images, so upload the highest quality available.
- Product images per listing: Unlimited (250 images per product).
- Zoom: Enabled automatically for images larger than the display size.
Etsy Image Requirements
Etsy prioritizes visual appeal. The first image is your listing thumbnail — it needs to stop scrollers in their tracks.
- Minimum resolution: 2000 pixels on shortest side.
- Recommended: 2700 x 2025px (landscape) for best display.
- Aspect ratio: 4:3 (landscape) recommended. Square works but leaves padding.
- File format: JPEG, PNG, or GIF (non-animated for listing images).
- File size: Up to 1MB per image.
- Total listing images: Up to 10.
- First image = thumbnail in search results. Make it count.
- Video: One 5-15 second video per listing (MP4, MOV, 100MB max).
eBay Image Requirements
eBay's requirements are relatively lenient, but higher-quality images significantly outperform the minimums.
- Minimum resolution: 500 pixels on longest side.
- Recommended: 1600 pixels minimum for zoom functionality.
- Maximum resolution: 9000 x 9000 pixels.
- File format: JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, or GIF.
- File size: Up to 12MB per image.
- Total listing images: Up to 24.
- No borders, text overlays, or watermarks.
- No stock photos for used items — actual product photos required.
Google Shopping / Merchant Center
Google Shopping feeds require specific image standards. Non-compliant images are rejected from the feed.
- Minimum: 100 x 100px (non-apparel), 250 x 250px (apparel).
- Recommended: At least 800 x 800px for best display.
- Maximum: 64 megapixels, 16MB file size.
- Non-apparel main image: White or transparent background preferred.
- Apparel main image: May show product on model or flat lay.
- No promotional text, watermarks, or badges on the image.
- Product must fill 75-90% of the image area.
Social Media Image Sizes
Product photos for social media have different optimal dimensions than marketplace listings.
- Instagram Feed: 1080 x 1080px (square) or 1080 x 1350px (portrait, more screen real estate).
- Instagram Stories/Reels: 1080 x 1920px (9:16 vertical).
- TikTok: 1080 x 1920px (9:16 vertical).
- Facebook Feed: 1200 x 628px (landscape) or 1080 x 1080px (square).
- Facebook Ads: 1080 x 1080px (square) for best performance.
- Pinterest: 1000 x 1500px (2:3 vertical). Pinterest favors tall images.
Universal Best Practices
Regardless of platform, these practices ensure your product photos perform their best.
- Shoot at the highest resolution possible, then downsize for each platform.
- Use sRGB color space for web (not Adobe RGB or CMYK).
- Compress images for web without visible quality loss. Target under 500KB.
- Maintain consistent aspect ratios across your catalog for a clean grid layout.
- Always include alt text for accessibility and SEO.
- Test your images at thumbnail size — if the product isn't clear at 200px, reshoot.
